2012? It wasn’t the end of the world

2012? It wasn’t the end of the world

I saw this bit of Eastern wisdom the other day – ‘If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.” A bit of truth there, I suppose, and yet there can be real value, at the end of the year, in taking a look back and weighing up the challenges and the successes.

For me, among many other activities, 2012 has been the year of the blog, and I must say I’ve enjoyed sharing my thoughts and experiences here over the year. To save you the boredom of reading back through my posts, I thought I’d pick a few key themes which seem to have emerged from them.

The main one that comes through to me is the fact that even though we’re all going through tougher times than many of us can ever remember, people and organisations still come together to help each other to survive, grow and get through things. Doesn’t that give you such faith in essential goodness of humanity, despite the picture the press sometimes likes to create?

In our industry we’ve seen some key organisations and bodies working together to support each other. In our own company we’ve benefitted from inspirational ideas from so many across our contracts.

In this blog I’ve talked about joint initiatives to cope with real challenges like droughts, bizarre weather patterns and Ash dieback, the wonderful work of professionals bodies like BALI and the National Contractors’ Forum, business awards, inspiration from the Olympics, technological innovations, effective business strategies, the brilliance of youth, and, overarching all of that, the power of community.

So, as I look back, I take deep satisfaction and pride from the achievements of our company as a whole, and from the brilliant work of so many within it. As a result, I can look forward without anxiety to what I am sure is going to be another equally amazing year.

On behalf of my company and my family, I wish everyone a lovely Christmas and fantastic year ahead. And looking at that growing pile of presents under our tree, I guess it’s time for a bit of that living in the present I mentioned earlier!

Till next time,

Matt
