Neil Cain, Operations Director, has been awarded the prestigious City & Guilds Award for Apprenticeship Champion of the Year.
The National Apprenticeship Awards, now in their 12th year, celebrate the success of the country’s most exceptional Apprentices and Apprenticeship employers.
Neil has been fundamental in developing John O’Conner’s award winning Apprenticeship scheme and believes in promoting opportunities for not only new young applicants, but existing employees as well.

Ashley Green named as one of the horticulture industry’s top young professionals
We are delighted that our Contract Manager, Ashley Green, has been selected as one of the horticultural and landscaping industries’ ones to watch in Pro Landscaper Magazine’s first ‘30 under 30: The Next Generation’ competition.
Pro Landscaper Magazine launched the ‘30 under 30’ competition earlier this year to recognise young people with exceptional talent coming through the industry. Nominations were invited from across all sectors, including garden design, build contractors, grounds maintenance contractors, landscape architecture and arboriculture, before an expert panel selected the top 30 candidates.

Alexandra Park wins London in Bloom Gold award
This year Alexandra Park has proudly received the London in Bloom Gold Award and crowned Category Winner for Large Park of the Year (above 25 acres), recognising the Park as an exemplary green space for Londoners to enjoy.

BALI Award for Ventnor Park!
We have received the prestigious Grounds Maintenance Award (Free Public Access) for Ventnor Park in Isle of Wight, from the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) National Landscape Awards 2015.
The Principal Award winner will be announced at the award ceremony held in London on Friday 4th December at the Grosvenor House Hotel London.
The Awards, which are run annually by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), pay tribute to landscape designers and specialist Landscape and Grounds Maintenance contractors who have demonstrated exceptionally high standards of professionalism and skill.

Green Flag Success
John O’Conner is proud to have supported our clients and local community groups to achieve 30 Green Flag Awards across our contracts, bringing considerable social, safety and environmental benefits to the local neighbourhoods.
Clarence Park in St Albans received the Green Flag Award for the 10th consecutive year under the partnership of John O’Conner and St Albans City and District Council. John O’Conner manage the submission process for the Council’s Green Flag Awards from application to judging stage, under the partnership we have achieved an award for Hatfield Road Cemetery and a Heritage Award for Verulamium Park for the first time.
Hertfordshire Skills Celebration
More than 100 employers, training providers and representatives from the University of Hertfordshire and business support services came together at the Hertfordshire Skills Celebration at Elstree Studios on 14th July 2015.
John O’Conner (Grounds Maintenance) Ltd’s Managing Director, Matt O’Conner and Apprentice, Lewis Ainge, were proud to be honoured at the event and participate in a showcase video promoting Apprenticeships, sharing their achievements in growing the skills base of the workforce.
In 2011 John O’Conner began offering intermediate and advanced apprenticeships in amenity horticulture and business and administration,
The Power of Partnerships
While our contracts are largely self-sufficient, it often makes sense for us to share certain equipment between depots, a small example for us being the remote control lawnmower which we use when areas of grass are too steep for us to mow with conventional ones. We run a simple diary and contract managers able able to book this machine up in advance.
This thought led me to contemplate the benefit of partnerships, not just within companies, but between them as well. All business owners can get into the mindset of thinking of themselves as completely self-sufficient, but the more I see of what can be gained through partnership,
Driver Style add to our Quartix vehicle Tracking System
As a company we have been extremely pleased with the features available on our Quartix vehicle tracking system. The most recent addition is driver style information and we are now starting to make real use of it. I am convinced it will improve our driver’s safety and make our fleet more efficient.
The Quartix driving tracking technology that we use in our vehicles is delivering so many benefits to our company, to our customers and to the environment as a whole. The new management tool to improve drivers’ style is now giving us a great deal of control over efficiency,
John O’Conner awarded grounds maintenance contract with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council
John O’Conner are delighted to have secured the grounds maintenance contract for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s cemeteries following a competitive tendering process.
The contract commences on 1st June 2015 for 5 years with an option to extend for a further 2 years. The sites include The Lawn Cemetery, Hatfield Hyde Cemetery, St Luke’s Church Burial Ground and St Etheldreda’s Church Burial Ground.
Managing Director, Matthew O’Conner, said; “This is a great opportunity for John O’Conner, integrating within our existing extensive Hertfordshire client portfolio. As a family company based in Welwyn, we are proud to be working for our local Council.”

John O’Conner re-awarded contract with Affinity Sutton Homes
John O’Conner are delighted to have been re-awarded their contract with Affinity Sutton Homes for the Hertsmere area following a competitive tendering exercise.
A key innovation in the contract bid included utilising this expertise to continue to work closely with residents and providing added value initiatives such as work experience opportunities, Apprenticeships and community/volunteer projects.
The new contract commenced on 1st April 2015 for the duration of 4 years. There is also a possible 2 year optional extension.
