Garden makeover for 100th birthday gift
Centenarian Joyce Law received a very welcome surprise 100th birthday present – a bouquet of flowers and a garden makeover, thanks to John O’Conner and social housing provider,
Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association.
Joyce, a keen and able gardener until last year, lives in a Berkhamstead basement flat managed by Hightown. On hearing of Joyce’s great achievement, the Organisation contacted John O’Conner for some free advice and muscle.
This week, the John O’Conner team transformed Joyce’s garden – all the weeds and ivy were removed, the hedge was trimmed and a new easy maintenance garden was planted with stones for extra colour.
A team of 6 professional gardeners used their skills to design, trim, and plant the terraces with colourful ground cover, transforming it into an easy maintenance garden.
Joyce said: “I’ve always been a keen gardener, but after a fall last year it is not a good idea for me to climb the very steep terraces to maintain the plants. Now all I have to do is water them. I am very grateful to the John O’Conner team for all their hard work.”
Joyce is one of the remaining few people who can remember the last war and hiding under the kitchen table when a Zeppelin or German planes flew overhead. She said: “I remember the airship being shot down in Potters Bar and after the war being one of 1,000 people singing with my mother in the Wembley Military Tattoo.”
