HorticultureWeek’s Apprentice of the Year Award
It was great to see that Ellis Molyneux was shortlisted for HorticultureWeek’s Apprentice of the Year Award 2013. Unfortunately Ellis did not walk away with the accolade this time but it is still a massive achievement and one to be acknowledged.
When Ellis joined John O’Conner he was working nights in a warehouse and was looking for a new direction. He was keen to learn a trade and came to an open-day to learn all about the JOC apprenticeship scheme. Once he had spent some time with the company he knew this opportunity was the right one for him.
A year into his apprenticeship he became team leader on a mobile gardening team in Hertsmere, two years on and he has completed his level 2 work based diploma in amenity horticulture and is currently studying for his level 3 at Capel Mannor College.
It was Ellis’s manager Geoff Kazer who spotted his talent and made him a team leader. Now it is unusual for an apprentice to be given responsibility so early but Geoff knows his decision is the right one and has often commented on what a good job Ellis is doing for him, the contract and our customer. Equally, Ellis enjoys the challenge of working outside and is always keen to learn from others.
Well done to Ellis for being nominated, I am sure he will continue to develop and progress his career with JOC and we will continue to train and invest in the apprenticeship scheme.
