Speaking with a shared voice
There’s a real buzz about the horticultural industry at the moment, with so many different organisations coming together to speak with a shared voice – all of which means we stand a much better chance of being heard.
Horticulture Week’s vigorous ‘Make Parks a Priority’ campaign is doing a really good job of highlighting the disproportionate cuts to parks maintenance budgets. The aim is to try and get as many MPs as possible to sign Early Day Motion 219 regarding funding for urban parks and ultimately Make Parks a Priority.
Also, The National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces supported by GreenLINK is in the process of setting up a petition to call for protection and improvement of the UK’s parks and green spaces.
Recently in February, Horticulture Week also hosted a round-table event with many influential green space champions discussing the creation of a cross-sector alliance to ensure an even bigger voice for parks.
BALI’s National Contractors’ Forum has also been active recently, providing presentations to the Green Space Forum. On top of all this, I recently attended GreenLINK meeting in London and wow, didn’t that make me even more aware of what an exciting and dynamic industry we are part of!
John O’Conner is an active supporter of all these campaigns and we are happy to engage with all sectors of the industry to make sure our support is felt. This year once again we will be supporting Parks Week which runs from 27 July to 4 August.
Our industry has never had as many challenges in front of it as it does right now, but when I look at all that is being done to ensure we meet those challenges, I can’t help but feel confident and upbeat.
